On my last trip to California, I had the chance to visit the GIA Museum in Carlsbad, an incredible experience for anyone passionate about gemstones and minerals. This museum is a true authority in the field, thanks in large part to the remarkable Hauser Mineral Collection, which showcases the incredible geological diversity of the United States.
The collection features a wide selection of iconic stones from the United States, such as petrified wood from Holbrook, Arizona, and the Morrison Formation in Utah; stunning variscite from Utah; chrysocolla and azurite from Arizona; and, of course, rhodonite from California and the magnificent Bruneau jasper from Idaho. Each piece in this collection showcases the art of rockhounding, the fascinating practice of collecting minerals and gemstones in the wild.
The museum also benefits from contributions from other prestigious donors from around the world. It houses rough and cut gemstones of exceptional color and size, with a fine selection of North American stones. Among the most famous are California benitoite, Montana agate, Willow Creek jasper from Oregon, as well as California spessartite garnets and tourmalines. Spectacular specimens of rhodochrosite and amazonite from Colorado round out this impressive collection.
If you’re visiting San Diego County, California, this museum is a must-see for anyone interested in minerals and the geological history of the United States.
This is a must-see if you're passing through San Diego County in California.
