Découvertes pour la première fois vers 1950, les Dryhead Agates ont été nommées d'après Dryhead Creek le long de la frontière entre le Montana et le Wyoming. Bien que les Dryhead Agates n'étaient pas bien connues au début, les collectionneurs d'aujourd'hui peuvent facilement reconnaître les Dryhead Agates par leurs fortifications orange et brunes et une variété de couleurs vives.
